The More Excellent Way

Refrain

I heard a song upon the wind
Calling me back from where I've been
Calling my feet to walk again
In the more excellent way

This is the rock to build upon
This is the map that love has drawn
This is where joy goes on and on
It's the more excellent way

The way of love it is so simple
A child can understand
Funny how it cuts across the selfish heart of man
And if you let it cut you you will find that you are healed
And you'll go on courageous with this weapon that you wield
It's love

Refrain

The way of love it is so simple
Even I can understand
Coming down in gracious tones
From him who said I can
And I rise up a conqueror
When I'm vanquished by the Lord
I lay down my defenses
Then I pull out my sword
Of love

That I May Know Him

People have asked me what kind of madness
Keeps me so free in the face of such sadness
I cannot tell when just words cannot say it
Still let me try as I fail to convey it
This is the portrait I'll paint in you mind
God loving shamelessly all of mankind

Refrain

Love came pursuing me dressed up in pain
Patiently wooing me time and again
With me in His sight heaven grew dim
Now, I'll lose my life that I may know Him

Love was a lie 'till His spread His arms open
Holding the world 'till His great heart was broken
Loving my soul with such reckless abandon
Giving my wandering feet grace to stand in
This picture trouble nor time can erase
That mixture of pain and love on His face

Refrain

People in love do the craziest things
Giving themselves without bargains or strings

Love came pursuing me dressed up in loss
Beauty embracing a hard ugly cross
With me in His sight went out on that limb
Now I'll lose my life that I may know Him

Love, it came chasing me I'll do that same
Giving it all and then calling it gain
With Him in my heart, all else grows dim
Now I'll take His part that I may know Him

The Only Wounds in Heaven

The sunlight plays on the gilded sea of glass
I'm light as air and I frolic like a lass
My wings are ivory, my house is tall and grand
And in the garden I can really hold God's hand

Familiar faces all streaked with happy tears
My children play and sing sweet songs amid the cheers
The chorus swells 'round the Friend-forever King
But fades out when we all behold the strangest things

Refrain

No one knows quite what to do
Some poor soul is asking you
"What are these?" and pointing to
The only wounds in heaven
The gentle breezes perfume the earth and sky
The sound of laughter, the flowers never die
The city rolls on for miles of open doors
And Jesus sweeps out His arm and says, "It's yours"

Refrain

And isn't it an irony
There is not one mark on me, ah but
One the hands that healed I see
The only wounds in heaven
And isn't that humility
Vestige of humanity
One God, for all eternity
The only wounds in heaven

The Great Clock of Time

"Time no longer" said the prophet
He with no beginning comes
He who started time can stop it
Can it be He waits for us?

Sing the everlasting gospel
Sound the trumpet, ring the chime
Loud with the voices of history
Perfect and plain as a rhyme
Beckoning us to keep listening
For the midnight alarm from the great clock of time

No one in the great forever
Will lament the riches lost
Or the fame he might have savored
Or the greatness of the cost

Rather for the moments wasted
He would give his one last dime
Just for a moment he squandered
Just for a chance to resign
One of the moments he wandered
As he laughed in the face of the great clock of time

He has loved us like no other
We have coldly turned away
In the person of a brother
He will come to us and say

"This is not the way I left you
"But a pious pantomime"
God's broken heart is the victim
Shutting out love is the crime
Empty religion the culprit
And you're holding the hands of the great clock of time

Every eye will see Him coming
Will it be with love or fear?
Some will see the eyes of fire
And not see the falling tear

When Orion frees her Captive
Love will light the eastern sky
Dressed up in colors of vengeance
Some will see shades of sublime
Now is the time to befriend Him
While these minutes remain on the great clock of time

Don't delay your preparation
Don't deny Him peace of mind
Willing to give you His favor
Bidding the stumbling blind
Look at the face of the Savior
As it shines from the face of the great clock of time

Talk

We were such a funny pair
Many ways the same
Many arguments
Two tin soldiers with a flare
For building walls of blame
With silent armaments

Then when good-byes came around
Love came crashing through
At last we laid the armor down
For suddenly we knew

Refrain

Talk while there's time
Learn how to listen
Life is uncertain, you know
Forgive while you may
Don't let the sun
God down on your anger
Just what the future will hold
No one can say

That's exactly what we did
Chumming like old friends
Laughing through the tears
Two tin soldiers became kids
War was at an end
After all those years
It was hard to say goodbye
But in all honestly
Those dying days we shared were
My sweetest memory

Refrain

Bridge: Not a speck of time spent in love is ever wasted
Why don't you say the things you'd wish that you could say

Talk while there's time
What really matters?
Winning an argument, or
Winning a heart
Those who you love
Listen for kind words
That is what words are for
So scatter the dark
And talk while there's time. . .

Banish the Myth

In the vast creation, there swims a lonely sphere
Sinking in the cosmos like a tiny falling tear
Racked with human anguish, drenched in senseless blood
Mushroom clouds like fists raised at God

Who feels the pulsing of all of our distress
Sees His world convulsing in what seems a hopeless mess
He whose grace and goodness fills the air
Hears His name in cursing more than prayer

Refrain

So much to do, so little to do it with
Still, everything within me wants to banish the myth
Usher in the revelation of this infinite salvation, tell them
Who He really is, forever I live to banish the myth

Yes, at last I see how dear God you've been maligned
Shrouded in a slander and grossly misdefined
An enemy hath done this, I stand up to fight
What's left to do once you have seen the light?

Refrain

Bridge: If you want to see the Father, then look on His Son
Stumbling to Golgotha if for only one, there's

I Am The Lamb on His Shoulder

There's a stark, rocky ledge in the den of decay
Where the wolves yell and yammer and clamor for prey
And the wandering lambs quiver helplessly there
Thinking their out of the kind Shepherd's care
There's a sound in the bush and a form that appears
With eyes that are never quite empty of tears
And a voice that rings caring and love in the ears
Caring and love in the ears

And the Shepherd heads home as the wind blows colder
And I am the lamb on His shoulder,
I am the lamb on His shoulder

There's a wound in the heart of the infinite sky
That never quite heals as time scratches by
And it weeps o'er the likes of you and of me
And the salt in the sore is our apathy
There's a wizened old Sage and He's pointing the way
And He aches when so much as a thought goes astray
And searches for wandering ones day after day
Searching for day after day

And the Shepherd heads home as the wind blows colder
And I am the lamb on His shoulder,
I am the Lamb on His shoulder

There's a window in church that saves me from death
When I'm drowning in verbiage and can't get my breath
I look at the colored glass lit by the sun
The picture that says every word without one
The tall, tender God in the form of a man
The dumb little filly that thoughtlessly ran
The wild love of Calvary searching the land
Calvary searching the land

And the Shepherd heads home as the wind blows colder,
And I am the lamb on His shoulder,
I am the lamb on His shoulder,
I am the lamb on His shoulder,
I am the lamb on His shoulder

Hands

There are hands like gnarled branches on an old and tired tree
There are hands so pink and tiny that they set the spirit free
There are starving children's hands with fingers dry, and thin
and curled
There are ladies hands with diamonds that could feed all of the world
There are hands that pull the trigger, yes hands that wield knives
There are hands that torment children and hands that batter wives
There are hands as soft as velvet, and hands as sharp as steal
But blessed are, blessed are, blessed are the hands that heal

And some hands hold the gavel and try to punish crime
And some hands hold the bottle and some beg for a dime
There are some hands signing lives away in signatures of war
There are hands that treat the wounded and hands that feed the poor
There are hands that rob the downcast, yes hands that touch with care
There are hands that clench in anger, and hands that fold in prayer
But my God's hands felt all the pain of love that hands can feel
Blessed are, blessed are, blessed are the hands that heal

The soft hands of a woman touched her sleeping baby's eyes
And brushed away the straw, and even shooed away the flies
The baby grew into a man with hands that worked in wood
Then found their way to flesh and blood, forever doing good
So few could stand the wordless way those hands proclaimed the truth
But they just cried the louder, as the iron cut them through
If God's hands were a promise, His scars became the seal
Blessed are, blessed are, blessed are the hands that heal

The Picture in His Eyes

Here is the face, here is the grin
Peel back the laughter, look deep within
Long I have known the life that you lead
You try to hide it, but you don't succeed

Look at me now, tell what you see
I was as broken as one could be
Not any more, the good news is true
The only thing is, I want the same for you

I can see it in your eyes
You've lost your way
Like a child without a mother
Like a ship without a bay
Like a soldier with no country
Like lamb without a fold
You wander in your heartbreak
With misery untold
I can see it in your past
The things they did
That said you were a loser
Ever since you were a kid
And if memories would listen,
I'd tell them all goodbye
And you could see the picture
In His eyes

Here is the Lord, see what He'll do
I don't deserve it, neither do you
Still there's this trade, assurance for shame
Looking through His eyes the picture's not the same

I can see it in His eyes
You'll find your way
Like a child will find a mother
Like a ship will find a bay
Like a soldier in His country
Like a lamb within the fold
You'll wander in the sunshine
With happiness untold
I can see it in your past
The things He did
That said you were a winner
Ever since you were a kid
And if memories would listen
I'd bring them all to mind
And that would change the picture
In your eyes
Then you could see the picture
In His eyes

The Language of Love

Leave the wounds alone and let them heal
Let your heart believe what you can't feel
All of this defeat, will be swept away
Sooner than you think, you will want to say

Refrain

The language of shame is no more on my tongue
I've forgotten the words, and the song can't be sung
And I will not be captive to the ghosts of the past
They may come here to haunt me, but I know it won't last
I don't care about me, but I know Someone does
And He said it with blood in the language of love

Tender are the eyes that see it all
Pitiful His heart when children fall
Shambles of the past, forgiven by the King
You can lift your head and say through anything

Refrain

La La Ha Ha

When the Lord set us free
Two things we would do
If you guess then I will give my guitar pick to you
Or read what the psalmist says and see how we were
Life was like a happy dream, captivity was turned

Refrain

We laughed, ha ha ha ha, we sang, la la la la la
We laughed, ha ha ha ha, we sang, la la la la la la,
La la la la la la, la la la la la la la

There's a time for everything and there's a time for this
And yes, there is much cause to cry, this dark side of bliss
Yes, things could be better, but you know they could be worse
So for the sake of future glory, let us all rehearse
